New House Group

A new House Group is meeting on the first Wednesday of each month at 8.00pm. This is an opportunity for fellowship, for prayer, for Bible study and for discussion of the Christian faith.

Everyone is welcome to come to all or any of the meetings. Further details (including the venues) from the churches or from www.honeyhill.org.

St Andrew’s Choir

St Andrew’s Choir contributed anthems on two Sundays during Lent and also two items on Easter Day.

A number of members attended the Ely Cathedral Festival on 19th May with around 300 other participants. This year the festival included a wide selection of music.

All members were saddened by the death on 27th April of ‘Pip’ Gill who had been singing with us since 1974. Pip was a greatly respected Churchwarden at St Mary’s, Fen Drayton, for many years, as well as singing with St Andrew’s choir on all our special services and regularly at our Evensong services. He rarely missed a Thursday practise night. He will be greatly missed.

The Children’s Society

The box opening and donations for this year have amounted to £348.17. This, together with the Christingle Service which raised £132.68, makes the final total for the year £480.85. I would like to thank everyone who has contributed to this result.

Now some news from the spring edition of the Society’s magazine. The Co-operative Society has chosen The Children’s Society, which gained 44% of votes cast, to be their charity of the year which means their employees are planning events in their different areas of business - food, banking, insurance, travel and pharmacy. More information on 0845 300 1128.

The society made its horticultural debut at the Chelsea Flower show this year, sponsored by Ecclesiastical Insurance and entitled ‘Lust for life’. Brightly coloured plants represent children’s dreams, with an arc of water cascading through the garden to reflect the power of the human spirit. Iggy Pop’s classic song ‘Lust for life’ provides a musical backdrop.

A new website has been launched for children and young people inviting them to contribute to the Good Childhood Inquiry, the UK‘s first independent national inquiry into childhood. The website, www.mylife.uk.com will feature a series of down-loadable celebrity VOD casts encouraging children and young people to submit their views.

Can you spare a click for childhood? The Society has launched a dedicated website allowing supporters to shop online with big-name retailers such as Tesco, John Lewis and Boots and raise money for the Children’s Society at no extra cost to the shopper. Simply click on a link to a retailer via the website: www.charityshopperschildrenssociety.com and the Society will make a commission on every purchase made.

I hope these few snippets from the magazine demonstrate how varied the Society’s efforts are in its determination to find ways to raise money and to bring the work of the Society to the notice of a wider public.

Again, thank you to every supporter for funds raised this year and may we do even better this coming year.

Harvest Festival Services 2007

As announced in the last issue of The Fisherman, following the successful visit of the Revd Gordon Gatward last year, there will again be a special preacher at Fen Drayton and Swavesey Harvest Festivals in 2007.

He is Ian Bell, the Director of the ARC-Addington Fund which invests in rural properties so that folks can leave farming with a measure of dignity. The harvest festival services will revert to their usual dates this year, so Ian will be coming to Fen Drayton and Swavesey on the morning of Sunday 7th October with the services in Conington and Lolworth on the following Sunday.

Confirmation Courses 2007

Beginning in the autumn it is once again planned to offer courses of preparation for those who are exploring the possibility of being confirmed.

Confirmation involves taking on for yourself the promises that were made on your behalf by your godparents at your baptism. But if you haven’t been baptised, this is no problem. There is always an opportunity to be baptised in the confirmation service itself.

Courses will be offered both for adults and for young people. Please ask for details from the Vicar/Rector.
